According to the dual-code view of face, there are two kinds of face processing methods: featural processing based on featural information and configural processing based on configural information, which are stored independently. These two methods play a very important role in face recognition.Among them, featural information refers to the fine visual information contained in the face, such as the shape of the mouth and nose, pupil color and so on.Configural information refers to the spatial distribution of facial components and their relationships, such as the distance between the eyes, the distance between the mouth and the nose.Based on the double-coding theory, this study aims to investigate the relationship between the two processing modes of facial configural and featural information and hemispheric specialized processing in face recognition, and to explore the expression of facial familiarity in facial lateralization and the work of facial configural processing in familiar faces.Because different cue-face information can induce different processing methods, the difference of face recognition between left and right visual fields can reflect the functional differences of cerebral hemisphere in configural and featural processing. This study links external behavior with potential brain processing and explores two main issues: first, how the brain hemisphere processes configural and featureal processing;second, role of configural processing in familiar face recognition and differences in familiarity of faces in the cerebral hemisphereTwo experiments were conducted to investigate the lateralized processing of face configural information and featural information during face recognition using a divided visual field task.In experiment 1,according to the cue information provided by the cue face, the subjects were asked to judge whether the cue face and the test face presented in the left or right visual field were the same face.Eye movements are used to monitor eye movements. The experimental results show that the left hemisphere has the advantage of processing featural information, and the right hemisphere has the advantage of processing face configural information better than the left hemisphere. In experiment 2,the relationship between face familiarity and configural processing is emphasized.Subjects were asked to identify learning facesand unfamiliar faces in the visual field and judge whether the burred faces presented are learning faces. The results show that the recognition effect in the left visual field is better than that in the right visual field, which indicates that the right hemisphere has more advantages in recognizing familiar faces with configural information, and also indicates that familiarity of faces plays a key role in the processing of configural information.
