Johannes Brahms was a great composer in the romantic 19 th century.He had been pursuing "absolute music" so he constrained excessive emotions of romance by seeking rigorous style in classicism even in that era.As a highly skilled pianist,his creations covering almost all musical genres except opera,the piano music was an important part with the skills of rhythm and variation being the most famous.The theme of “Variations on a theme by Schuman” created by Brahms in 1854,is selected from the first one in op.99 “Albumblatt” contained in "Colorful Leaves" by Robert Schumann.This paper taking “Variations on a theme by Schuman” as the research object.,give a brief overview of life,creation and variations for Brahms to understand the creative background of the work.And the paper will know its creative characteristics through the analysis on the sixteen variations of the work and summarize its performance based on a deep understanding of its works.
