In recent years, animated films have been an important met:hod in the process of cultural communication. The animated films based on Chinese stories, such as Mulan and Lotus Lantern, have also had an increasing influence on international students. The analysis of such animated films adapted from traditional Chinese stories is of great significance for us to use these materials more effectively in the class of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Due to the intertextuality between the adapted works and the original works, this article is based on the intertextuality theory in literary criticism, and is to study the intertextuality between Mulan,Lotus Lantern and the original traditional Chinese story which the two films are adapted from. The intertextuality analysis is carried out to explain the different characteristics of the two films in the process of adaptation from the perspective of the ideology of general intertextuality and the adaptation of narrow intertextuality. From the perspective of general intertextuality,we know that Mulan is a typical Hollywood film that incor:porates the American individual heroism ideology, and uses the outer shell of the Chinese story to incorporate American values;Lotus Lantern abandoned the untimely concept of "loyalty and filial piety",and replaced it with the concept of "harmony between man and nature" that is more in line with the requirements of the times.Through the analysis of narrow intertextuality,we conclude that in Mulan,an intertextual "parody" approach was adopted, and the supporting role of "Lion King"was simulated.Through two story lines,it not only achieves the effect of humorous humor, but also strengthens the theme of individual heroism. The Lotus Lantern directly collages the characters of Sun Wukong in "Journey to the West",thus forming a stark contrast with the villains, and emphasis the core concept of "harmony between man and nature".
