Since the recent rise of historical documentary themes in China, historical documentary literatures have been well received by readers. But there are more studies on Chinese history in China and less on the translation of foreign history. In the case of historical documentary, there are a variety of topics involved, including regional culture, customs, linguistic features, and so on.In the process of translating such texts, there are problems of incompatibility between the translation of the source language and the target language due to linguistic and cultural differences. This report mainly focuses on the Thick Translation theory, and aims to introduce and analyze the application of annotations in historical documentary literature. The war of the succession in Spain began in 1701 and ended in 1714.The war was caused by the absence of the Habsburg Dynasty in Spain and the struggle between the Bourbon Dynasty in France and the Habsburg Dynasty in Austria for the Spanish throne and its colonies. It finally became a war in which most European countries participated. This book has its own characteristics in terms of vocabulary and syntax. This translation practice is selected from the sixth and seventh chapter of the War of the Succession in Spain. There is no translation of this two chapters and no translation of this book has been published. The article contains a lot of background information, involving religion, history, characters, geographical names, etc. There are a lot of places in the original text that readers of target language would find hard to understand due to cultural differences, which will not only cause default of the content, but also make readers boring. Therefore,it is necessary to translate the necessary difficulties in the interpretation of the text through necessary annotations, reduce readers' understanding difficulty, increase the readability of the article, and compensate for the lack of text content. In the process of translation, the author follows Kwame Anthony Appiah's Thick Translation theory, hoping to find the correct way of translating historical texts, make up for the vacancies in historical and cultural translation, and expand the knowledge of historical and cultural lexical translation through the translation of this text.By translating the professional terms and relevant cultural background knowledge into Chinese and annotating and analyzing them,Chinese readers can have a more detailed understanding of the history of Spain and deepen their cultural cognition while experiencing the history of other countries.
