A Translation Report On Book Ⅶ Of A History Of New York-on Annotation In Translation From The Perspective Of Thick Translation

Though more than twenty years have passed since Kwame Anthony Appiah put forward the concept of "thick translation", the gap of how "thick translation" should be realized in real practice has not been filled.This report is intended as an exploration into the problem of how annotation should be employed to achieve "thick translation" through reflecting on a translation project that the author took part in to render BOOK VII of A History of New York by Washington Irving into Chinese.In this report, two major principles of annotating in translation are sorted out, namely the principle of content and that of form. Annotation is divided into implicit annotation and explicit annotation, each of which can be further categorized into three or four sub-groups.It is hoped that this report will offer some guidance to translators on how to employ annotation to realize thicker contextualization, and that this attempt will inspire later scholars to undertake further study of "thick translation".
