| This report is based on the translation of the historical book July Crisis: the world’s descent into war,summer 1914.The book was written by Thomas G.Otte,the professor of history at The University of East Anglia,and was published by Cambridge University Press in 2014.It mainly expounds the whole process of the First World War.The translator selects the prelude of the book as the source text to do the translation practice.The prelude of the book mainly describes the cause and course of the Sarajevo incident in detail.By reading and analyzing the source text,the translator finds that it contains lots of hidden background information which needs to present to Chinese readers.The translator needs to find a suitable translation theory to guide to make information compensation.Based on the features of the source text,the Thick Translation theory is proper to guide translating the source text.In the report,the translator explores the objects,methods and principles of information compensation in translating historical text.By analyzing cases,the translator lists five kinds of objects needed to make information compensation,two methods to add annotation and two principles to ensure adding appropriate annotation.The report consists of four chapters: Chapter One task description describes the background,objectives and significance of the translation task and the structure of the report;Chapter two process description contains translation preparation,translation stage and post-translation management;Chapter three case analysis explores the practical application of the Thick Translation theory in translating the source text;Chapter four conclusion includes major findings,limitations and suggestions of the translation practice. |
