A Translation Report Of American Epic(Chapter 5)Based On Deep Mining Of Terminology Database And Parallel Corpus

With the rapid development of modern translation industry,the ability to use and manage terminology databases has become a basic requirement for professional translators.CAT applications such as Snowman,Trados,Deja vu,MemoQ,etc.have greatly reduced translator's pressure to process documents and find relevant information.At the same time,with the development of language processing and text mining technology,mining and extracting terminology resource and relevant knowledge from texts has become a useful approach in translation practice.With the expansion of the corpus size and the maturation of related technologies,corpus has also been used to carry out some researches in other fields.For example,the emerging corpus translation is one of the models using corpus to do topic research.Meanwhile,corpus has made great contributions to the study of translational dominance.Corpus has a huge potential for translation practice.In particular,translators can extract corresponding knowledge such as terminology and language materials from English-Chinese bilingual parallel corpus,which also greatly helps the translator in the process of translation.This report describes how the translator uses the self-built corpus to extract terminology and related knowledge in the process of translating the book American Epics and how the corpus assists translation practice.This report firstly illustrates the way to processing corpora using snowcat and Tmxmall.Secondly,it illustrates the steps of creating,retrieving and using the corpus in memoQ.Finally,the application and guidance of parallel corpus to translation practice are discussed in detail and hoping to provide reference and help for corpus-based translation practice in the future.The book American Epic involved in this translation project is a masterpiece of history.It has 12 chapters in total telling the story of how the United States developed from a colonial era to a superpower.This report is based on the fifth chapter of the book American Epic.And this chapter is mainly about the Westward Movement of the United States and the American Revolutionary War that erupted during this period.In addition,the United States was introduced from the economic,political,cultural,and religious aspects in chapter 5.In the process of translation,the parallel corpus can help translators solve many problems encountered in the translation process and ensure the consistency and standardization of technical terms.At the same time,by searching the corpus with similar context,translator can analyze the translation styles of professional translators,so as to get more optimized translations and learn more authentic expressions.
