Reading teaching is the core of English teaching in senior high schools, and the cultivation of students' reading ability should be highlighted. However, for many of the students, their reading ability is still weak.Reading obstacles remain the most important and urgent problem in English reading teaching,as they seriously affect the effect of students' reading. If students spend a long time and energy but cannot achieve the desired results, they will lose interest and confidence in English reading,or even give up reading. Therefore, teachers need to explore and analyze the obstacles that students encounter in their reading, and find out feasible countermeasures to help students resolve these obstacles so as to improve their reading ability.By means of questionnaires and interviews, this study attempts to find out the obstacles that high school students come across in their English reading, analyze the causes of the obstacles, and propose corresponding countermeasures. This study aims to answer the following questions:(1)What obstacles do high school students have in English reading?(2)What are the causes of high school students' English reading obstacles?(3)What countermeasures can be used to help high school students solveEnglish reading obstacles? The study finds that for senior high school students, the main obstacles in English reading are: vocabulary obstacles, grammatical obstacles and discourse obstacles, reading skills obstacles, reading habits obstacles and reading interest obstacles. The causes of these obstacles can be summed up as follows: there is a common problem of vocabulary shortage among students;many students are weak in grammar so that they do not know how to simplify long and difficult sentences, fail to pay attention to the change of tense;students tend to ignore the overall structure of the text and the logical relationship between chapters;poor use of skimming and scanning skills is obvious among students, and poor reading habits such as finger reading,back-reading and voice-reading can be found in their process of reading;most students just read for exams not for reading itself.Feasible countermeasure are proposed in six aspects, each targeted at one obstacle with the aim of helping students overcome these obstacles and improve their ability of comprehensive use of English.
