The Research Of Abbreviation Lexicalization In Modern Chinese

Abbreviations,words that are compressed and abbreviated and semantically unchanged in Mandarin.The economic principle of language will promote high-frequency words,reduce the number of words,and thus achieve the purpose of communication optimization,this process is the process of abbreviations.As a method of making words,abbreviations are one of the effective ways to produce new words in modern Chinese.The abbreviated words that have been used frequently and whose meaning has become integrated.Lexicalization is a historical evolution of the lexical nature of the new words,and the lexicalization of abbreviations is a special lexicalization.Its particularity is reflected in the process of abbreviating as long as the signifier changes,the reference has not changed.The object of this paper is the abbreviations from The Modern Chinese Dictionary.Based on the theory of disyllabic,word model and syllabic morpheme,this paper explores the lexicalization of abbreviations from synchronic and diachronic perspectives.In this paper,the object of study is limited to The Modern Chinese Dictionary.By counting the abbreviations in The Modern Chinese Dictionary(from the third editions to the seventh editions),the diachronic changes of abbreviations are summarized.Taking the seventh edition as an example,to reveal he characteristics of abbreviations and the motivation of lexicalization of abbreviations.Although abbreviations are already vocabulary,there are still some differences at different levels on the synchronic level.This paper explores these differences in detail,and concludes the criteria for the lexicalization degree of abbreviations.According to the criteria,abbreviations can be divided into three levels:low-lexicalization abbreviations,middle-lexicalization abbreviations and high-lexicalization abbreviations.Finally,this paper elaborates another difference of abbreviations(the asymmetry of abbreviations in form and grammatical function)at the synchronic level,and explores the tendencies of abbreviations.
