Reading is regarded as a vital skill in language learning,and it is getting more and more attention in English teaching.However,the current situation of English reading and teaching in junior high school are not optimistic.The problems of students' weak reading ability and lack of interest in English reading has been increasingly prominent.Therefore,improving students' English reading interest and ability has gradually become the focus of English teaching,and teachers make efforts to seek for a more effective English teaching mode.This thesis aims to apply narrow reading to the junior high school English reading teaching,which is intended to verify the effectiveness of narrow reading.It is also dedicated to exploring the following two research questions:1.What is the effect of the Narrow Reading on junior high school students' English reading ability?2.What changes have taken place in students' interest and attitude towards English reading after the application of narrow reading?The subjects of this experiment are two ordinary class students in Grade 7 of a junior high school in Shenyang,a total of 96 students.And the two classes are divided into an experimental class and a control class.The experimental class adopts the mode of narrow reading,while the control class uses traditional reading training method.The research instruments for the experiment include pre-test,post-test,questionnairesand interviews.The data collected in the experiment has been analyzed by SPSS software.The experimental results showed that(1)narrow reading can effectively change the students' interest and attitude towards English reading.(2)narrow reading can improve students' reading achievements and have a positive impact on students' reading ability.According to the above findings,some suggestions are proposed in order to help students improve their reading interests so that their reading abilities can be promoted as well.
