This report is based on the translation of The Adventures of Jimmy Brovwn written by the famous American journalist, novelist, humorous writer William Livingston Alden in 1902.Jimmy Brown is the hero of the short story and he recorded the interesting story in the first person narrator. The translator has learned more translation skills and improved the translation ability through this translation practice. The difficulty in this translation practice lies in translating long English sentences into appropriate Chinese sentences. In addition,as this novel belongs to children's literature, how to translate the original text with a proper style acceptable to readers of the target language is also a major focus and difficulty for the translator.According to the type of the original text, the translator chooses Eugene Nida's"Functional Equivalence Theory"as the theoretical guidance of the translation, which indicates that the translation not only reflects equivalence in lexical meaning, but also includes the equivalence in semantics and style. The translation conveys not only lexical information, but also deep cultural information. The translator adopts such translation skills as splitting sentences when dealing with long English sentences so as to make the translation version more acceptable. The translation practice gives the translator some inspirations:first, translation practice cannot move on without the guidance of translation theory and translation theory should be tested by practice.Second, translation practice is inseparable from the research of the author and background knowledge.Third,a good command of English and Chinese is also required.
