| As cultural exchanges become increasingly frequent at home and abroad, more outstanding foreign children’s literature works have sprung up in China, and the demand for relevant children’s literature translation has also been on the increase dramatically. However, our country’s researches on children’s literature translation are still far from comprehensive,so it needs to be further improved in both translation practice and theoretical research. Therefore,in this paper, the translator hopes to employ Nida’s functional equivalence theory to effectively guide children’s literature translation and summarize some practical translation strategies. This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The selected translation text is from Chapter Five to Chapter Twenty of children’s literature entitled Harbor Me written by African-American writer Jacqueline Woodson.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, the paper aims to analyze the strategies of functional equivalence theory applied in children’s literature translation, mainly at lexical, syntactic, stylistic and cultural level respectively. The findings through the case analyses of this paper are listed as follows.Firstly, children’s literature is targeted at a specific group of readers — children,so the translator should pay more attention to the young readers’ language level, cognitive ability and understanding ability in the translation process.Secondly, compared with adult literature, children’s literature has its own unique language features, including educational,interesting,vivid,story-telling and image-creating characteristics. Finally, through case study analysis, the translator finds that Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory can effectively guide the translation practice.Generally speaking, this thesis analyzes its translation text with specific translation strategies and methods from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory. And the translator tries to make the target language readers receive the closest information with the source language readers. So this thesis is of a certain practical significance and value,as well as the translator hopes it can offer a reference for the practical study of children’s literature translation in future. |
