A Contrastive Study On The Interpretation Of Animal Nouns In The Commercial Press Learner's Dictionary Of Contemporary Chinese And Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary

The Commercial Press Learner's Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese(hereinafter referred to as The Commercial Press)is the first foreign-oriented Chinese learning dictionary written for foreigners with intermediate Chinese proficiency.At present,the domestic research on dictionary definition mainly includes four aspects,including the interpretation of meta-language,interpretation content,interpretation pattern and interpretation principle.Generally speaking,there have been comprehensive studies on dictionary definitions,but the study of dictionary interpretation of restricted parts of speech is still relatively lacking.By investigating and studying the dictionary definitions of animal nouns in The Commercial Press,this paper analyses the ways,contents and principles of defining animal nouns in the dictionary,which can not only provide some reference for the compilation and revision of the dictionary,but also can help to promote the development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.This paper is based on the division of the semantic field of words.In this paper,113 dictionary definitions of animal nouns in The Commercial Press are selected as the research object.And it studies the definitions of animal nouns in The Commercial Press from various perspectives by combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis and it also uses some other methods such as comparative analysis and so on.The main body of this article can be divided into three chapters.Firstly,this paper makes a general investigation and research on the interpretation of animal nouns in the 2007 edition of The Commercial Press Learner's Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese and Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary.In this chapter,it is concluded that there are four ways to explain the names of animals in the The Commercial Press and Oxford,namely,defining,corresponding,describing and explaining interpretation,and cross-interpreting.The defining interpretation is the most used.In addition,this article also provides a more detailed classification of the defining interpretation.Furthermore,this paper makes a comparative analysis of the ways in which the common animal nouns are interpreted in The Commercial Press and Oxford.Finally,it sums up the problems in the interpretation of The Commercial Press.Secondly,this paper makes a macro-examination and analysis of the interpretation of animal nouns in The Commercial Press and Oxford.In this chapter,the definitions in the dictionary are divided in detail,including the generic words indicating the category,the appearance characteristics of animals and the function or use of the animal.At the same time,on the basis of subdividing the content of the interpretation,comparative analysis is made on the definition of animal nouns in The Commercial Press and Oxford.Finally,this paper also analyses the problems existing in the content of the interpretation of The Commercial Press.Finally,in view of the previous research on the interpretation methods and contents of animal nouns in The Commercial Press,this paper puts forward some principles that should be followed in dictionary definition compilation,including the principles of systematicness,scientificity and conciseness.These principles are not only applicable to the compilation of dictionary definitions of animal nouns,but also to the compilation of dictionary definitions of other types of words.
