The process of modernity triggers individual arrogance, madness, depression, anxiety, confusion and resistance. These experiences are not only objects of literary expression, but also endowed with special cultural significance, which is not only an external representation of social reality, but also the epitome of modern society. The writing of Robert Musil can be described as a complex and incisive diagnosis of the "symptoms" of the era,and morbid experience represented in his works is not only an aesthetic existence, but also a cognitive tool given by the writer. The writing of morbidity is penetrated from beginning to end of Musil's writing. From the debut novel Die Verwirrungen des Zoglings Torle? to the posthumous Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften,Musil has created a variety of pathological figures, and in-depth description of morbid experience and abnormal psychology in these works fully demonstrates his profound writing skills and artistic value.Musil is good at capturing the trivial fragments of the world, and focus on the marginal status and conscious division of individuals in the context of modernity. In this way,he reveals the living conditions of modern individuals and the trend of modern culture. On the basis of the close reading of the text, and combining the influence of Nietzsche's immunology on Musil and the related theories of morbidity in Congilm and Foucault, this thesis will interpret the writing of morbidity in his novels. The thesis is divided into five parts:the introduction part of the article introduces Musil's works, the research object of the thesis and both domestic and overseas research status,as well as the research purposes and methods. The first chapter defines the scope of the "pathological"concept to be discussed in the paper and teases out its historical sources, and discusses Nietzsche's view on diseases and immunology and Musil's own overall interpretations of this issue.Based on Musil's novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften,Chapters two and three analyzes the representation of morbidity, including sexual anomaly, madness and melancholy, and the analyzes the symbolic meanings behind these morbid experiences.Futhermore, this thesis analyzes the relationships between normal and morbidity, norms and disorders, and the subject and the society. The conclusion interprets meaning of without qualities and unfinished reason of Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften.Musil is fully aware of the productive value of passion, madness and melancholy in politics and culture. He regards morbid experience as a source of creativity,so that he can think deeply some vital problems containing language and norms, the relationship between individuals and the world,self-awareness,and so forth.Ultimately,Musil tries to achieve the revaluation of value.
