Rhetoric is very important for the western society. From ancient Greece to the late19th Century, it was a central part of western education, filling the need to train public speakers and writers to move audiences to action with arguments.An Inconvenient Truth is one of the most successful documentary movies ever made. The movie producers delicately and expertly use the skills of rhetoric to enhance the ethos, pathos and logos of former United States vice president Al Gore, who is the major actor of the movie. Shown around the world with the help of modern technology, this influential and persuasive documentary has succeeded in reshaping the mainstream opinions of the international society over the issue of global warming.To put the phenomenal success of An Inconvenient Truth in its proper context, the history and the contemporary conditions of rhetoric are introduced in this paper. The main chapters that follow are devoted to an analysis of the use of rhetoric in the movie of An Inconvenient Truth. A lot of details of the movie will be analyzed to explain how the employment of rhetorical power results in the influencing of the audience’s understanding and attitude toward the issue of global warming. In addition, more background information will be introduction so as for the readers to understand better the political environment under which this movie was produced.
