The subject of this paper is the anaphoric usage of interrogative pronouns in modern Chinese. The concept of "anaphora" is proposed by Shao Jingmin(1996:234-235)and it refers to the non-interrogative usage of interrogative pronouns, such as: " Whatever he does,I will do that, too." In this kind of "what" sentence, the former "what" refers to anything, and the latter "what" refers to that of the former one. They both refer to the same thing.According to the contents of the former "what",we can figure out the contents the latter "what" refers to.In conclusion, the contents of the latter interrogative pronoun changes along with the contents of the former interrogative pronoun. They form a "Leaning Change" relationship. We call this type of sentence a "finger-bearing" sentence. The "what" here refers to different interrogative pronouns, namely "Wh-".We hope to systematically describe the syntactic, semantic and stylistic features of the finger-bearing sentence by describing a large number of corpora, and observing the context in which the sentence often appears. Finally,we would like to conclude "What is the nature of the semantic relationship of this sentence?" and regulations of the anaphoric usage of interrogative pronouns. The first chapter introduces the research object, research purpose, the main structures of the article, and the significance and methods of the research.Besides,it explains the sources of the corpora. Finally,we have summarized the current states of the researches about the anaphoric usage of interrogative pronouns in three aspects, which are the classification, grammar?semantics and pragmatics, comparisons of the researches between China and foreign countries. The second chapter mainly classifies the finger-bearing sentences in three aspects.Firstly, based on the syntactic function of interrogative pronouns, the finger-bearing sentences are divided into two categories. One is the interrogative pronouns serve as the same syntactic component in two parts of the sentence(ie,the two parts have the same syntactic construction). The other is the interrogative pronouns serve as different syntactic components.(ie,the two parts have differentsyntactic construction).Secondly, based on the sentence characteristics, the anaphoric usage of interrogative pronouns can appear in single sentences and complex sentences. The complex sentences include categories like single compound sentences,multiple-repetition sentences and condensed sentences. All of these are in order to explore the characteristics of sentence patterns. Finally, based on the formal characteristics of the finger-bearing sentences, they are classified into sentences with relational marks, sentences with no relational marks and elliptical sentences.According to different kinds of marks, they are further divided into sentences with typical relational marks and sentences with secondary relational marks. The third chapter mainly examines the semantic features of the finger-bearing sentences. On the one hand, through observing the sentences as a whole,we have explored their internal semantics. And then,we have proved the unrealistic characteristics of the finger-bearing sentences from both semantic and formal aspects. On the other hand,we regard this "non-reality" as a semantic modality category.Referring to the non-realistic sentence semantic system summarized by Zhang Xueping(2012),we form a set of semantic systems of finger-bearing sentences. That is to say,we try to figure out the various external semantics contained. Finally, through the statistics of the corpus,we would like to determine which meanings belong to the basic categories of semantics, and which belong to the edge one.In the fourth chapter,we use quantitative and qualitative analysis methods to examine the main distribution of finger-bearing patterns in different styles, and the causes of it.Besides,we also explore the distribution rules of the finger-bearing sentences with different patterns as well as those sentences with different interrogative pronouns. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of the whole thesis.According to the researches,it summarizes the syntactic, sentence, formal, semantic and pragmatic features of the finger-bearing sentences. At the same time, the innovation and shortcomings of this paper are pointed out.
