It is pervasively acknowledged that note-taking in consecutive interpreting(CI)is an indispensable tool to reduce interpreters' memory burden and improve interpreting quality. However, such idea is also widespread that notes is a double-edged sword, the misuse of which will be counter-productive.The non-negligible importance of CI quality and the distinctive role of notes in CI have generated a large volume of studies. Some puzzles related to them are solved while a significant number of others still remain.Given this fact, the relationship between interpreting notes and quality is researched.Under the guidance of Gile's Effort Model of CI,two hypotheses related to the quantity of notes and interpreting quality are raised in the thesis. The first hypothesis is that “Interpreting quality improves as the quantity of notes climbs until the quality reaches the peak level at which time noting quantity is in the optimal range, and after the peak level the interpreting quality drops as noting quantity continues to increase”.The second hypothesis is that “The proportion of different-typed notes used in note-taking is a prominent influence on the quality of interpreting”.To test these two hypotheses,an experiment with 20 subjects is conducted to collect the notes and recordings of one English-to-Chinese(E-C)interpreting task and one Chinese-to-English(C-E)interpreting task. After an evaluation of the total quantity of notes, the respective quantity of different-typed notes and the quality of interpretations,a comparative analysis is carried out on these data. The result indicates that the relationship between the total quantity of notes and the quality of interpreting is in line with the first hypothesis in the E-C interpreting task but not in the C-E task, and that the relationship between the quantity of different-typed notes and the quality of interpreting does not match the second hypothesis explicitly in either task.
