A Study Of The Correlation Between Note-taking And Interpreting Quality In Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of The Schema Theory

Note-taking plays an important role in consecutive interpreting.Because interpreting activities are usually impromptu,on-the-spot,and unpredictable,they present great challenges for interpreters.Human memory is divided into instantaneous memory,short-term memory and long-term memory.In English-Chinese consecutive interpreting,it is necessary for interpreters to have a strong memory.However,when the tension of the interpreter increases to a certain extent,it will have a negative impact on the interpreter's memory.Therefore,it is risky for interpreters to rely entirely on human brain memory in interpreting activities,because interpretation activities do not last long,and notes can relieve the burden of interpreters and help them clarify the logic of the articles.This thesis mainly analyzes the relationship between interpreting notes and interpreting quality in consecutive interpreting.This thesis analyzes the logic of note-taking and the use of symbols in interpretation notes,the number of symbols,the choice of note language and the spatial arrangement,and the C-E Simulating Translation of Xi Jinping's Remarks the 19 th Meeting of the SC of the NPC with Journalists at Home and Abroad(October 25,2017,)and E-C Simulating Translation of Theresa May's Resignation Speech(July 24,2019)are chosen as materials.This thesis is guided by the four functions of the schema theory(construction,inference,search,and integration)and three forms(linguistic schemata,content schema-ta and formal schemata).The thesis author selected 10 students from the English interpretation class of 2018 to practice together and analyzed their notes.The final conclusive points are as follows: 1.On taking notes,no matter what is to express and what symbols used the note-taking must have a clear logical relationship.It is very important for interpreters totranslate later.2.The correct use of symbols can greatly improve the quality of interpretation.But the number of symbols does not have much effect on the quality of interpretation.3.The choice of note-taking language has a certain influence on the quality of interpretation.When an interpreter chooses to take notes in more target languages,it improves the speed and quality of the interpreter's translation.4.As for the spatial arrangement of the interpretation notes,the arrangement of the interpretation notes in the form of a ladder,with distinct subject and predicate,in the vertical recording mode and with distinct beginning and ending can make the notes clearer and make it easier for the interpreter to refer to the notes in the process of translation.
