| Jean Rhys is a British writer born in Dominica,West Indies. Her Creole identity made her pay close attention to the Creole women’s experience. In 1966,Jane Rhys published Wide Sargasso Sea,which is called the prequel to Jane Eyre.In this novella,Jean Rhys subverts the traditional way of writing, and gives the madwoman in the attic Bertha the right to speak, letting her tell her own story. This thesis explores it from the perspective of postcolonialism of Homi Bhabha. The first two chapters analyze manifestation of hybridity and mimicry in Wide Sargasso Sea,and chapter three mainly discusses the subversive stratedies employed in this work. These days, with globalization becoming more and more remarkable, the cultures of all countries in the world are more and more "hybridized"together. Therefore,it is practical to analyze the cultural identity of the heroine Antoinette in Wide Sargasso Sea.Homi Bhabha’s postcolonial theory is of great significance to provide the theoretical basis to address the problems of the former colonies.By tracing her interaction with others and analyzing her own identity crisis, this thesis explores the various stages that Antoinette experienced:anxiety, integration, resistance and redemption. And also, this paper focuses on the author Jean Rhys’s attempts to dissolve eurocentrism of traditional literature in the creation of Antoinette’s redefining and finding her cultural identity. |
