An Analysis On The Role Reversal Of Contemporary Chinese Artists

With the intervention of capital,for their own interests,some artists in China today create some crude and low or even vulgar art works just to cater to the needs of the market without any bottom line.These works are flooding in our daily lives and causing a negative effect on our spiritual and cultural lives.Under such circumstances,having sensed the negative influence of these bad works of art,nowadays,some artists determine to alert the public in some ways so as to guide them to say no to such vulgar works of art and to appreciate and focus more on the works of art concerning with ultimate love and care for the human spiritual and cultural aspects.However,if these artists can only use their own works of art to warn the public,but in this way and because of its very nature,never will the artists be able to convey their own views to the public clearly and well.Of course they will fail to make everyone ponder about the vulgar art.Therefore,these artists transformed themselves into intellectuals.In a more direct way rather than their works of art,they express their criticisms strongly on the vulgar and vulgar art through their own voices in public with the intention to cause public to think by themselves.So,what is the motivation lying behind the cultural phenomenon of their role transformation,Of this phenomenon,Most scholars have failed to make a detailed and systematic analysis.In this paper,three parts are being discussed.From the external motivation,there are three main reasons for the occurrence of this cultural phenomenon.First,with the emergence of modern society and secularization,Disenchantment becomes the main Characteristic of Modern Society.The characteristics of desacrificing laid the foundation for the formation and development of an equal and open social space.Second,modem society has formed a space between the state and the individual,which provides an external environment for the artists to express their ideas.This very environment has the characteristics of openness and equality,which enable these identity-transforming artists to express their views to the public on various artistic phenomena and problems arising under the intervention of capital in this space.Third,the emergence and development of the intellectual class.The criticism of vulgar and vulgar art by the artists who have transformed their roles comes from the characteristics of the intellectuals' criticism of culture and other issues.There are the following two points to discuss from the specific manifestations.The first one is that the transformation of these roles and artists' identity are influenced by the spirit of Chinese traditional scholars' "going to the society and experiencing the life".The critics of those role-switching artists who criticize the undesirable artistic and cultural phenomena in society(vulgar and vulgar works of art are pervading in our life)show their deep concern for the artistic and cultural problems in the reality.And to some extent,this concern has carried forward and developed the spirit of traditional scholar-bureaucrats intervening in the real world.The second is that these artists have their own consciousness and independent reflection on vulgar art,which can stop them following the crowd to cater to such kind of art,but can enable them to go against their ways to criticize and reflect on them.From the motivation of art itself,the ultimate goal of art is the Supreme care and concern for the human spirit without utilitarianism.The specific manifestation of this concern is the artist's concern and care for the human survival situation,namely,the care for the highest state of the human spirit.However,due to the influence of our consumer society and the popular culture,the vulgar arts without any depth and the works of planarization retard the exploration of the human spirit and spiritual world by art itself.Meanwhile,these crude arts are so overwhelming in our lives that they are almost forming the trend of excluding the art of expressing human ultimate concern.Thus,it is impossible for the artists to express their ultimate concern for the human spirit through art itself.While the expressive power of art itself can not bear its ultimate goal of concern and care for the human being,it will look for other outlets to achieve this goal.The transformation of Wu Guan zhong and of other artists to intellectuals is to find an appropriate way to achieve the highest goal of art---to express his ultimate concern and care for the human being.To sum them up,under the combined action of internal and external factors and the development of art itself,the cultural phenomenon of the role transformation of artists should come into being in response to the proper time and conditions.
