English,as a major universal language in the age of globalization,is the media of economy,culture and technology communication between China and other countries.Learning and using English plays an important role in absorbing the results of human civilization,spreading Chinese culture and improving the mutual understanding and communication with other countries.With the issue of high school curriculum for English in 2017,culture awareness has been regarded as one of the most important key competencies of English subject.Most English teachers,however,are not able to put emphasis on cultural introduction due to some existing problems.The thesis is intended to find answers to the following questions:1.What is the current situation of culture introduction in the procedure of English text reading teaching in high school?2.Will students' reading skills be improved through culture introduction in the procedure of English text reading teaching in high school?3.What are the appropriate approaches of culture introduction in the procedure of English text reading teaching in high school?Based on the study,the thesis finds out:In the actual high school English class,due to limited class time,teachers,often ignoring the cultural background knowledge of the text,tend to place more emphasis on analyzing the language points in the text rather than the understanding of the whole passage.Thus,it seems that students have grasped the meaning of each word and grammar knowledge in the text,while in fact they still have difficulty in understanding what the author expects to convey in the passage.Teachers' failure to introduce culture background knowledge in text reading classes has become a barrier which has prevented students' reading comprehension ability from being improved.Contrarily,culture introduction in text reading class effectively helps students understand the message conveyed in the passage and master the hidden cultural meaning of the words.Meanwhile,culture introduction can arouse students' interest in text learning.In the course of comparing,appreciating,criticizing and analyzing different cultures,students' international horizons are sure to be expanded.They can learn to understand,respect and tolerate different cultures,thus strengthening their culture awareness and boosting the development of key competencies.After the analysis of all the data and questionnaire,feasible teaching approaches are proposedin terms of such aspects as the contents which should be introduced,the methods that should be used and the effects of introducing culture background knowledge in English text reading class.
