Chinese Resultative Verb Construction?RVC?is one of the important and characteristic Chinese causative syntactic structures. The basic structure of RVC is “NP1+ V1+ V2+?NP2?”,in which there exists the resultative relation between V1 and V2,and NP2 is dispensable. The study of linguistic ontology of RVCs has aroused great concern of researchers at home and abroad in the academic field.Based on this, this thesis attempts to develop a syntactic and semantic description of RVC from the perspective of corpus linguistics as well as deep linguistic language processing in order to discover linguistic knowledge. In the framework of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar?HPSG?,a formal description of its syntactic and semantic properties and rules will be performed based on the results of empirical analysis and ontology research of corpus materials. Finally, the computational parsing will be implemented.According to their combination characteristics of arguments of the verbs and the construction,Chinese RVCs are classified into basic structures and derived structures. Also, viewed from the argument structures and the modes of syntactic arrangement,Chinese RVCs can also be classified into sub-types.The empirical research is based on the corpus materials in An Online Database on Verb-Resultative Construction in Contemporary Chinese developed by Peking University.Eight sub-databases are extracted from the databases of CCL?Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU?and BBC?BLCU Corpus Center?.According to the results, the arguments and assumptions will be tested, which will lend some empirical support to the theoretical analysis. The major findings are as follows: 1)76% of the Chinese RVCs are composed of one-syllable resultative verbs and resultative complements?verbs or adjectives?,while 24% of them contain resultative verbs or resultative complements which have more than 1 syllable.2)For the consideration of the computational implementation, the thesis deletes the sub-types of which V1 is seen as the argument of V2,because this manipulation is against the framework of HPSG in which only nouns can be the arguments of verbs of adjectives.3)In the process of corpus annotation and analysis, the thesis proposes a new sub-type named as “rslt-22-osc” which hasn't been analyzed by Shi?2008?.The object of V1 and subject of V2 are co-referred in “rslt-22-osc”.After the linguistic analysis, the final part of the research is the computational implementation of Chinese RVCs.Having analyzed previous researches concerning RVCs?Fan,Song,& Bond,2015?,we find that one of the deficiencies is that most of the RVC constructions are described in the lexical level, which results in not only the system redundancy but also the deviation from the linguistic meanings that RVC is a construction in essence. After the linguistic descriptions of RVCs and the formalization have finished, the implementation of these rules is handled on the platform of Linguistic Knowledge Building system?LKB?.
