When students are engaged in discourse communication,they will frequently use “Hmm”.In the process of using “Hmm” by Foreign student,“Hmm” has a very complicated pragmatic function.Based on the relevant theories of interactive linguistics,this study analyzes that when students use “Hmm” in the real context,“Hmm” mainly assumes three discourse functions: doubt,affirmation and filler.According to the different positions of "Hmm" in the discourse,the author has elaborated on the three discourse functions of "Hmm".According to the utterance function of “Hmm”,the author analyzes the influence of “Hmm”on the conversation from the length of the conversation,the fluency of the conversation and the emotional attitude of the listener.Next,the author investigates the reasons why foreign students use “Hmm.” Through the investigation,the author finds that the use of “Hmm” by international students is mainly influenced by the mother tongue,gender and language level.Finally,the author analyzes our attitude towards this linguistic phenomenon under different circumstances,and according to the individual differences of foreign students,puts forward specific countermeasures to deal with the use of “Hmm” by international students in oral communication.
