In recent years,Western fantasy films and TV series have increasingly influenced and been welcomed by Chinese audience, along with various subtitle translation versions emerging. However, there still exist many problems, such as un-unified standards and poor quality. This paper selects some fragments of the "Game of Thrones" TV episodes as analyzing examples, using the translated versions of Tencent Video and of the wardrobe subtitle group as materials to conduct a comparative analysis of the case. This paper selects the Functional Contextual Theory of Halliday's Functional Linguistics as theoretical guidance.Functional Contextual Theory believes that there are three elements in context, namely, field, tenor, and mode.In different situations, different character relationships, and different modes of dialogue, the words and phrases of the dialogues operate differently. This paper each focuses on one of the three elements and uses that as a variable to help analyze the two different versions of translations in detail, and to compare and summarize the problems in the subtitle translation of Western fantasy films and TV works. After analyzing the case word-by-word and sentence-by-sentence,this paper finds some problems in subtitle translation:only emphasizing on one or two of the three elements while overlooking the rest;over-emphasizing the literary grace;no unified standard for subtitle translation;discarding the original information at will.I hope this paper could provide inspiration and ideas for subtitle translation practice and even subtitle translation researches.
