A Translation Report On Our War With Spain For Cuba's Freedom(Chapter 23-28)

This paper is a translation report.The original text of the project chosen by the translator is a documentary literary book about military war written by an American famous writer Trumbull White.The book,Our War with Spain for Cuba's Freedom,was published on Sept.10,2010 by Kessinger Publishing,with 54 chapters.Due to the limited length of the report,the translator chooses chapter 23-28 as the translation material.This section is mainly about Cuba's revolt against Spanish colonial rule at the expense of blood.Under Spanish tyranny,American citizens in Cuba were also victimized,which led to the outbreak of the American-Spanish War.In addition to introducing several key figures,this section also devotes a great deal of space to describing the persecution of Cuban people and American citizens under Spanish rule.War is the disaster of mankind.Therefore,the author of the report thinks that translation of the book is not only conducive to popularizing the knowledge of the American-Spanish War,but also beneficial to serving as an educational material in the modern peacetime,leading the readers to reflect on the war and learn the lessons of the past.The report is composed of four parts:translation project background,task description,case analysis and summary.During the translation process,the author takes into account the features of the original text,the initiator of the translation,the target language readers,etc,and selects Nord's "function plus loyalty" translation theory to guide the translation practice.The application of the theory is explained in detail from lexical,syntactic and discourse perspective.At the same time,translation techniques such as conversion of parts of speech,amplification,omission,and combination and so on are adopted to help solve the problems and difficulties encountered in the process of translation,so as to make the translation more readable and to realize the significance of the translation project.This translation practice has not only improved the author's translation ability,but also made the author obtain several translation revelations from this practice:firstly,translation practice must be supported by translation theory in order to stand up to scrutiny;secondly,consider of the quality of translation,the dictionary and relevant reference should be consulted frequently in translation;finally,the translation needs to be revised and polished after the completion.
