A Translation Project Report On Livestock:Food,Fiber And Friends(Chapter Four)

The current translation project is on Livestock:Food,Fiber and Friends,which is written by Professor Erin McKenna.This book is based on her experience of visiting farms and ranches and her deep communication with the owners of those farms and ranches,including Thundering Hooves Ranch.Crown S Ranch and Windy N Ranch.In the book,she shares with readers the current research f'indings about livestock as well as her visiting experiences.The book exhibits new achievements of adopting various ecological farming modes,which are supported with the cases.What this book presents is not only meaningful to the sustainable development of China's animal husbandry but also to the improvement of the food industry in our country.The text for the translation project is the fourth chapter of this book,"In Mixed Company:Deep Ecology,Meat Consumption and Conservation."It is an informative text whose main function is to convey information.So the difficulty of the project lies in how to correctly convey the intention of the writer in a way that is acceptable to readers.The difficulty is particularly reflected in the translation of some words and sentences.Difficult words include proper nouns,idioms and common nouns in specific context,and difficult sentences include long and complex sentences,elliptical sentences,and passive sentences.In order to settle these difficulties in words and sentences,the text was analyzed with Nord's Text Analysis Model,and the difficulties were settled by translation skills—including addition,depletion,use of f-our-character idioms,transference of sentence structure and division—in accordance with the requirement of Nord's Function Plus Loyalty principle.Under the guide of Nord's functionalist theory,the intention of the original author was correctly understood and the in formation was effectively conveyed.In the translating of the informative text,the translator found that the top priority should be given to the delivery of' the original author's original intention in the translation of an informative text so that the functional equivalence and the communicative purpose can be achieved.To be specific,on the one hand,the translator should be responsible for her translation and ensure that the background information is not only correctly understood but also conveyed without omission or distortion.On the other hand,by taking both readers' acceptance and understanding,and the differences between Chinese and English into consideration,the translator should make sure that the translated text can be easily understood and can be received by readers.
