Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL)has already been utilized by many scholars to conduct research on translation phenomena and methods.Based on SFL,appraisal theory, one of the most comprehensive theories in studying attitude in language, has been taken advantage of by Chinese scholars to study novel and advertisement translation. However, appraisal theory has not been used in the translation studies of Chinese poetry yet,in which,as a figure of speech, the utilization of language to express complicated emotions is commonly used. Therefore, this paper aims at utilizing the attitude system under appraisal theory to conduct a translation study of Chinese poetry.Chinese poetry is a medium through which profound Chinese culture is transmitted.Li Bai is one of the greatest romantic poets in Chinese history, whose imagination and extraordinary thought are embodied in lines of his poems. His poetry is unique and kept well.Meanwhile, numerous translators have translated Li Bai's poems, leaving rich materials and data to be studied. The present thesis chooses Xu Yuanchong and Fletcher's translated version of Li Bai's poems as examples to conduct both statistical analysis and case study. Both Xu and Fletcher adopted the translation method of amplification, adaptation and omission in translating Li Bai's poems.Besides, the number of changes in the translation of attitude system is confined to a certain scope, meaning that there are no significant differences between Xu's and Fletcher's versions in attitude translation. In the case study,it is found that both translators utilized amplification to meet the requirement of rhyme. As to the translation of punning, both translators choose to keep the basic meaning. However,Xu and Fletcher also take different approaches in translation. For example,Xu is prone to use "color" words to express the appreciation in the attitude system, while Fletcher usually adapts "number" words to improve the readability of his translation. Methods worthy of attention in poetry translation are provided in this thesis. For instance, the requirement of rhyme in the poem can be met through amplification. In addition, the adaptation of "number" can improve the readability of translation.Meanwhile,"annotation" as a method put forward by the former researchers in literary translation studies can be utilized to improve Xu's and Fletcher's translation methods. As for the further studies, due to the limitation of data in this thesis, other versions of Li Bai's translation or the translation versions of other poets can be utilized to check the conclusion.
