As a cultural carrier, sinology journals play an important role in the development of Sinology. They have become a platform for sinologists to communicate and make statements. The journals of Sinology were continuously emerging after the missionnaries came to China.By the 19 th century, many sinology journals had been established and achieved remarkable achievements, such as the famous Sinology Journal Chinese Respository(1832-1851),The Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society(1858-1907)and The Phoenix(1870-1873).They witnessed the efforts of generations of sinologists. The study of Chinese classical novels in the 19 th century was centered on translating. Many Chinese novels, which were translated by sinologists, have been published in these journals, and many people around the world have realized the unique charm of Chinese classical novels. As a sinology journal which was founded in the late 19 th century and who has been published since then,T'oung Pao published many researches of the Chinese classical novels.Different from many other sinology periodicals,it rarely publishes the translations of Chinese classical novels, but to publish sinologists' studies on Chinese classical novels. These articles have important academic significance and represent the sinologists' realizations of Chinese classical novels at that time. The papers of T'oung Pao were strictly selected and are of high quality, and the editor-in-chief is also a pivotal figure in the sinology community.Paying attention to T'oung Pao's researches on Chinese classical novels can not only supplement the academic literatures on the westward transmission of Chinese classical novels, but also enhance the understanding of sinologists in the academic circles. At the same time, following the track of studies about the Chinese classical novels in T'oung Pao,the trajectory of Western sinological studies on Chinese classical novels is also clear. This paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the general situation of studies from three aspects(Articles de fond, sinologists and Chinese classical novels). It also summarizes the development of these studies in T'oung Pao in the 20 th century. This development took the 1980 s as a node, representing the research characteristics of the French school and the American school. The second chapter will focus on the studies of Chinese classical novels before the 1980 s.Most of the articles in this period are the study of the history of the Chinese classical novels. This research direction can be subdivided into author, version and textual relationship research. After the 1980 s,the number of traditional studies of Chinese classical novels was greatly reduced, and new research methods began to appear in large numbers, focusing on linguistic and sociological methods. The third chapter will focus on this period. At present, the academic circles do not pay enough attention to the studies of Chinese classical novels contained in T'oung Pao.Most of researches of T'oung Pao are translations of articles, and there has not been a special analysis of these studies in T'oung Pao.This paper can supplement the academic understanding of Western Sinology, and fill some blanks of the history of Sinology, which has important reference significance.
