T'oung Pao,founded in 1890,is an influential professional Sinology journal.It contains a large number of papers and book reviews on Sinology,which has high Sinology research value.The journal truly reflects the development process of French professional Sinology in the first half of the 20 th century,embodies the academic strategies of famous French sinologists such as Edouard Chavannes,Paul Pelliot and so on,and is the epitome and true portrayal of the history of French Sinology.The research attempts to make an overall understanding of French Sinology in the first half of the 20 th century by combing the papers,book reviews and news from 1890 to 1944.Firstly,the research reconstructs the overall background of T'oung Pao,including the French activities in China in the 19 th century,the establishment of professional Sinology in France in the 19 th century,the update of publishing technology,transportation conditions and other factors.The research analyzes the relationship between T'oung Pao and its predecessor Revue de l'Extrême-Orient,the positioning column setting of T'oung Pao,the influence of the chief editor on the running of T'oung Pao,the distribution of T'oung Pao and the contributors.From the perspective of research field,based on l'index complémentaire par Matières,the research sorts out all kinds of articles in T'oung Pao from 1890 to 1944,which proves that T'oung Pao is involved in all fields of Sinology,the research level of each field is different,and the professional Sinology is constantly deepening and isolated from each other.From the perspective of research area,based on the Pays et Régions,we can find that T'oung Pao pays special attention to the investigation and research of western regions and Tibet.Most of the articles published in T'oung Pao focus on documents' interpretation,and go deep into other research fields through documents,which is consistent with the development trend of French Sinology.T'oung Pao actively introduced the advanced research methods of western historical linguistics,phonetics,archaeology,epigraphy,sociology and other disciplines,enriched the research field of Sinology,and produced a series of important academic achievements.In the first half of the 20 th century,professional Sinology in France,as T'oung Pao shows,involves all aspects of the field of Sinology,and its research methods have a new development.Professional Sinology in France has entered its heyday and has an important impact on International Sinology in the late 20 th century.In the first half of the 20 th century,French Sinology actively used new materials found in archaeology,introduced new research methods such as epigraphy and historical comparative linguistics into the Sinology's study,actively contacted with Chinese academic circles,and strengthened academic consciousness,fully reflected Ed.Chavannes,P.Pelliot and distinctive personal academic characteristics,and focused on sorting out the articles and reviewed of Ed.Chavannes and P.Pelliot as the French Sinology research and clearing science It is of great reference significance to study the French Sinology.
