Reading is an essential approach to getting information,improving the ability to employ language and meeting people's spiritual need?Additionally,English is regarded as the global language.Therefore,in an era of economic globalization and social informationization,possessing strong ability of English reading comprehension is of great significance.Today science and technology developing rapidly,in order to keep pace with the global development,it is inevitable for our country to popularize the latest science and technology via education.In addition,the total score of examination papers in Jiangsu college entrance examination is 120,of which 30 is the score of reading comprehension.According to the statistics of the examination papers in Jiangsu college entrance examination from 2008 to 2017,four articles in reading comprehension almost annually cover a popular science article.Therefore,it is a must for students to master effective methods and strategies of reading English popular science articles.Based on schema theory and genre analysis theory,the thesis discusses the influence genre-based teaching approach has on improving senior high school students' ability of English popular science reading,employing questionnaires,interviews and reading comprehension tests.Using the findings from previous researches on genre analysis and genre-based teaching approaches for reference,the thesis selects a popular science from the English textbook for Senior Middle School in Jiangsu Province(Oxford edition)and designs the teaching courseware with the help of Multimedia to do research on more than 80 students from Grade two of a senior high school in Jiangsu province.The study is aimed at finding out whether genre-based approaches can improve the students' ability of popular science reading and inspire students' interest and confidence.First of all,the author investigates the students' attitude towards the application of genre-based approaches to English popular science reading by questionnaires and the students' current reading level by inviting them to take part in the pretest of popular science reading comprehension which another class of 38 students is invited to take.After that,a five-month teaching practice of genre-based teaching approaches is carried out among the more than 80 students.At the end of the semester,some of the students were selected for interviews and a post-test is arranged among the 80 students and the class of 38 students.Based on the comparative analysis of the collected data,it is found that genre-based teaching approaches,to some extent,can improve students' reading comprehension competence and motivate students to read popular science texts voluntarily and confidently.It is hoped that the study can provide some theoretical support for the future research on the application of genre-based teaching approaches to English popular science reading and meanwhile provide valuable reference for teachers and scholars who are interested in the research of this field.
