Zen is a unique way of thinking originating from the East, which has great influence on the culture and art of the East and the West. Before Zen was introduced into the West, the influence of Oriental things on Western art remained in form.In the stage of western modern art,Clement Greenberg,an American art critic, codified the theory of modernist art and locked the aesthetic quality of modern art, which became the watershed between modernism and post-modernism.Later,the United States,as the center of western modern art, first contacted and introduced Zen thought, which provided an opportunity for the transformation of western modern and contemporary art.Suzuki Daisetz,a Zen scholar, played a major role in the dissemination of Zen thought. He provided an important ideological basis for artists in the transitional period of modern and contemporary Western art.By analyzing the commonality of Zen thought and Western Contemporary Art in concept,we can have a deeper understanding of the development of western contemporary art,and at the same time urge us to rethink Zen thought and bring Zen thought into future artistic creation.
