The selection of this thesis is based on the following considerations: to begin with, since Verschueren put forward adaptation theory, many scholars have tried to discuss the feasibility of this theory for language research from various perspectives. It can be seen that the application of adaptation theory to interpret linguistic phenomena is feasible from many researches. However, the author finds that few scholars use this theory to study diplomatic language, especially on Chinese diplomatic language. Therefore, the thesis is to explore whether adaptation theory is feasible in the analysis of Chinese diplomatic language in order to enrich the scope of application of adaptation theory and broaden the research content of adaptation theory. What is more, many scholars at home and abroad have made extensive research on the application of vague language from various styles from different angles, and they have achieved many results. However, most of these studies of vague language are based on cooperative principle, politeness principle or relevance principle, while the number of studies of vague language from the perspective of Verschueren's adaptation theory is even less. There are fewer studies of vague language in diplomatic language, especially in Chinese diplomatic language from the perspective of adaptation theory. In this thesis, the author focuses on the analysis of vague language in remarks from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespersons on the disputes of South China Sea from the perspective of adaptation theory which aims to have a more comprehensive understanding of vague language.Eventually, the disputes of South China Sea has always been a hot issue in the relevant disciplines, and the it is still a hot issue in the international debate. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to study how the choice of vague language in diplomatic language in the disputes of South China Sea adapts to the mental world, social world and physical world.Besides, the integration of three worlds of vague language is also analyzed. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a new perspective for the study of Chinese diplomatic language. The research shows that adaptation theory is feasible in analyzing vague language in remarks from spokespersons on the disputes of South China Sea.In the press conference on the disputes of South China Sea,the spokesperson intentionally or unintentionally uses a large amount of vague language in the process of language choice to meet their actual communicative needs;based on adaptation theory, vague language used by spokespersons adapting to the mental world mainly includes self-protection,keeping good image and face-saving.The social world mainly includes international environment and social conventions. The physical world mainly includes time and space;it is found that the choice of vague language used by spokespersons can be adapted to the three dimensions simultaneously. There are both theoretical and practical value in this thesis.Theoretically, the thesis can expand the view of linguistic study and enlarge the range of studies on vague language in diplomatic language.Practically, this thesis can help people better understand vague language in Chinese diplomatic language, and use it correctly in communication to achieve the harmonious communicative effect. At the same time,it is expected to reveal the explanatory power of adaptation theory in the use of language in various styles.
