Chinese teaching reform has witnessed the shift from the traditional “text-centered” teaching approach,which mainly emphasizes on learning,to its counterparts,the “task-based” or “project-centered" which puts stress on application.The divergence between learning and practice in oral English teaching has not been alleviated but getting more intense as the drawbacks are becoming conspicuous.In view of this,Professor Wen Qiufang created a distinctive Chinese foreign language teaching theory named Production-oriented Approach.During the following two decades,POA has been fully developed and expanded in a wide range of projects relevant to college English teaching and has achieved fruitful results.This paper attempts to apply POA to secondary education,oral English classes in Senior High,to be exact,focusing on whether POA can promote oral English teaching for senior high school students.The specific research questions are as follows: 1.Can POA promote students' oral achievement? 2.Can POA enhance students' enthusiasm for oral expression?The subjects of this experiment are two parallel classes of a local senior high school with similar English proficiency,an experimental class and a controlled class respectively.According to the English proficiency requirements of POA,the English proficiency of the students in both classes should reach A2 or above the European Common Reference Framework.Oral English teaching in the experimental class and the controlled class was conducted by the same teacher.The experimental class adopted the POA mode to teach oral English,while the controlled class used the traditional teaching mode.The experiment duration was 12 weeks.The methodology of the experiment integrated both quantitative and qualitative methods.Quantitative research was mainly manifested in the process of experiment with oral pre-test and post-test.In order to maintain the reliability and validity,all test questions were excerpted and adapted from IELTS tests.The pre-test and post-test scores were analyzed by SPSS software.Meanwhile,qualitative research data were collected via a post-experiment interview as a supplement.In the open interview,eight students were randomly selected from the experimental class.Interviewees' responses were carefully observed,recorded and transcribed for further analysis.After 12 weeks' research,the ensuing meticulous data analysis reveals that the students' oral performance in the experimental class significantly improved,while the students' oral performance in the control class had only a little improvement compared with the pre-test.Through the questionnaire analysis,it was found that the students were satisfied with POA mode,and this method can effectively enhance the students' enthusiasm in oral expression.In addition,in the course of the study,the author also put forward corresponding teaching suggestions for the application of POA in senior high school,hoping to provide reference for the further study of this method.
