The material chosen in this English-Chinese consecutive interpreting report is an episode of The Ezra Klein Show,an interview program in the podcast,titled Is Modern Society Making us Depressed?.In this episode,Ezra Klein,the host,and the British writer Johann Hari,the guest,make a discussion on the social causes of depression and anxiety in modern society.There are two main features of the material.Firstly,the interview is rich in content,clear in logic,high in content density,and complex in information structure.Secondly,the interviewer and interviewee use a fast speech rate with less pauses and standard pronunciation.From the perspective of the content of the material and the speed rate of the material respectively,the report focuses on the discussion of the impact of complex information structure and high speech rate on the listening and analysis,comprehension,remembering and production during the consecutive interpreting and tries to find coping methods respectively.For complex information structure,division,adjustment,paraphrase,combination,and omission are adopted.For high speech rate,the focuses of note-taking are keywords and discourse markers.This report aims to help the interpreters analyze and interpret complex information more efficiently,to provide the interpreters with methods to cope with complex information structures and high speech rate,and to reduce the pressure of listening and analysis,comprehension,remembering and production.Thereby,the quality and the efficiency of the interpretation could be improved.
