Flaw is a word that no one likes.Once an article or a thing has a flaw, then it becomes imperfect in people's mind. The antonym of flaw is perfect. In Chinese traditional thought, people pursue the complete, flawless thing. However, how many things are perfect in this world? There are old sayings like “Gold can't be pure, and man can't be perfect” and “People may have sorrow or joy,be near or far apart. The moon may be dim or bright, wax or wane.” Since the ancient time, people have already been knowing that nothing can be very perfect in the world. All good things come to an end,the flowers can't always be in full bloom and the moon can't keep in full.Auguste Rodin, the famous French artist, used to say,“Beauty is everywhere. Our eyes do not show a lack of beauty, but a lack of observation.” In a way from artist's perspective, the most perfect thing, the same as if there are incomplete. This is flawed beauty.Flaw contains not only historic and culture meanings, but also aesthetic and pluralistic meanings. This thesis will discuss the flawed beauty by using the example of Chinese ancient porcelain from three perspectives: firstly,to introduce what is flaw, and the definition and connotation of it;secondly,to introduce the origin and development of flawed beauty and how it is showed in the work of art from the point of view of different cultures between Chinese and western;thirdly,to introduce the representation of flawed beauty in the art of porcelain taking the example of Chinese ancient porcelain. The porcelain is a special art which is the perfect combination of clay and fire.In the long history, there would be flaws in some parts of porcelain due to different causes, but it won't affect its whole beauty.Ceramic repair technology, which is as a traditional and distinctive repair craft, would show us an alternative flawed beauty.
