The great achievements of Chinese classical gardens are their profound artistic characteristics of time and space.However,the gardens have exposed problems not only inadequate protection of traditional features,serious damage,but also difficulties in repairing with the age.In view of the situation,this thesis intended to explore the significance of the literati garden paintings in the late Ming period for the representation and restoration of sites and materials of Chinese traditional garden.Chinese traditional painting is a vital mean of recording current events and expressing emotions.The literati garden painting in the middle and late Ming was a unique part of traditional Chinese painting.The literati and occupants used landscape gardens as the object of depiction and truly reflected the garden landscape.Wujin ?? "Zhi" garden ?? is the relic of the Jiangnan in the late Ming,which has been destroyed.The collection of "Zhi" garden and its biography,notes and poetry are still available.The art historian James Chill highly praised the collection of garden paintings since the twentieth century,arguing that its level of detail could rebuild this great landscape.Based on the research of garden albums and garden records,this thesis will draw diagrams and analysis charts.The thesis also explores the historical evolution,artistic characteristics and expression of the related literati gardens.It tries to propose the general idea of the restoration of Chinese classical gardens.Through the case studies of the classical garden,it will explore the accuracy of garden landscapes in garden records and atlases,and compared with relevant supporting data to verify the feasibility of using paintings.
