The Study Of The Jiangchu Compilation Press

Jiangchu compilation press was a famous official agency that compile and publish textbook in the late Qing Dynasty,which has great significance in the history of publishing in China.My thesis consist of establishment,operation and historical status of Jiangchu press,and gives a comprehensive introduction to the Jiangchu press.Jiangchu press was born in the tide of reform of educational system in late qing dynasty and development of modern education in Jiangning.It was set up by Zhang Zhidong and Liu Kunyi.It undertakes the task of compiling textbooks for new schools in the Jiangsu province and other places.During its founding period,the press had sent someone to Japan for investigation,instituted a series of management system and methods of compiling,employed a number of well-known scholars,such as Miao Quansun,Luo Zhenyu,Chen Sanli,Chen Qingnian and Liu Yizheng.Thanks to their efforts,Jiangchu press once developed rapidly,and not only published hundreds of textbook but also successively managed the famous press of Jiangnan press and Huainan press.It also had close ties with the new schools,libraries and department for education.However,due to the limitation of the official system of Jiangchu press,the press had wasted expenditure and the translations efficiency was low.In addition,Jiangchu press,insist the principle of "Chinese-style Westernization",lacks talents who are proficient in modern education,so that some of the textbooks compiled by Jiangchu press are not of high quality,and some of them can not even pass the official examination.Moreover,with the growing development of department of education compilation press and private textbook publishing institutions such as the commercial press,Jiangchu press can not equal to them in aspect of scale and technology or compilation of textbook,and was eventually abolished under the pressure of public opinion.Despite the final gloomy end,during its operation,the press translated and compiled some influential textbooks,such as Brief History,History of Qing Dynasty,Biography of Foreign Women,History of All Nations,accumulated some experience in textbook compilation.But beyond that,Jiangchu press had direct participated the construction of high school of Jiangnan,Sanjiang Normal College,Siyi primary school,Jiangnan library,promoted the development of Chinese modern culture and education,boosted the spread of New culture in China.
