On Ke Ling's Prose Creating

Ke Ling is known to be a Chinese modern essayist and editor.His works include a range of novels,poems,children's prose,as well as literary criticism.And he has edited more than 20 types of newspapers,magazines,and other literary supplements.What Ke Ling had experienced is just like an epitome,reflecting the torturous condition of Chinese intellectuals at that time.Throughout his life-long creating experience,prose is undoubtedly his most favorite literary form.During more than 60 years of his career,the content of his prose reflects life extensively,from the raging anti-Japanese battlefield to the scenery of his hometown,in which Ke Ling shaped various characters and plots.And all these characters and plots,showed us a long scroll of life and history of China in the 20 th century.This thesis attempts to make a systematic,holistic and comprehensive analysis of Ke Ling's prose,through historical and theoretical methods.From the perspective of history,the analysis will be oriented to introduce and explore different periods of Ke Ling's prose creating and his life experience.From the perspective of theory,the analysis will focus on Ke Ling's prose theory and his artistic pursuit.This essay aims to help with the full understanding of Ke Ling's prose creating on the basis of the development history of prose in China and Chinese intellectuals during the 20 th century.The first chapter of this thesis is the general introduction of Ke Ling,including three aspects: Ke Ling's life experience,literary achievements and interactions among his several identities.The second chapter is the focus of the thesis.After reading Ke Ling's works thoroughly and connecting them with the Chinese history of the last century,the thesis divides his prose writing career into four periods: first,a general understanding of China's urban and rural society(1930-1936);second,the turbulent years(1937-1948);third,the period of ode and “chilly” warmth(1949-1962);fourth,the reflection as a survivor of social turbulence(1977-1997).The fourth part is the focus that combines history and theories,as it shows Chinese prose development and the spiritual development of Chinese intellectuals in the 20 th century.The third chapter discusses the artistic pursuit of Ke Ling's prose.On the basis of the development history of Chinese prose theory in the 20 th century and Ke Ling's own prose theory,this chapter discusses Ke Ling's artistic pursuit in detail,which can be described as “truth in content,aesthetics in spirit”.The fourth chapter makes conclusions about the meaning and value of Ke Ling's prose.Through the discussions of the above four aspects,the thesis hopes to enrich the research on Ke Ling in the history of modern literature and fill the relevant research gaps.
