This paper mainly studies the regular script inscriptions of the Northern and Southern Dynasties,sorts and studies the calligraphy art of the Northern and Southern Dynasties,focuses on the artistic style and characteristics of The Stele of Zhang Menglong,and analyzes the artistic ideas of the Northern and Southern Dynasties.Calligraphy arts reached a peak in the Wei,Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties in China,when people were free and liberated in spirit,and the most intelligent and enthusiastic,and literature and fine arts were developed to a great extent.Affected by such a strong artistic atmosphere,stele inscription calligraphy developed rapidly in such an environment,with a large number of excellent works and calligraphers emerging at that time.The Wei and Jin Dynasties were an important period for the transition from the clerical script to the mature regular script,while the cursive script and the regular script tended to mature.The art of regular script calligraphy,a typical representative of calligraphy arts in the Wei and Jin Dynasties,is a milestone in the regular script stele inscription calligraphy and a representative of regular script stele inscription which continues from the calligraphy of the Han Dynasty and introduces that in the Tang and Song Dynasties.Regular script in the Wei and Jin Dynasties is the transitional style from the clerical script to the regular script in Tang Dynasty.The Stele of Zhang Menglong is the most representative stele inscription of regular script inscriptions in the Northern Dynasty,marking the transition from the clerical script to the mature regular script.The Stele of Zhang Menglong has the most unique style and features in the mature period of the regular script stele inscriptions of Wei Dynasty.It contains plenty of skills and methods,and it is dominated by square strokes and supplemented by round strokes with natural changes,leading to the characters with strong lines,high and strange structures.Abundant spatial layout and changeable rules and regulations show the magnificent,forceful,simple and vigorous characters.Furthermore,it involves the most typical brushwork and structure among the inscriptions in the Northern Wei Dynasty,with an ancient,meaningful and naturally elegant effect.Its unique artistic style plays a role in promoting the selection and development of regular scripts for future generations.The calligraphy of the Northern and Southern Dynasties are expounded in four chapters in this paper.Chapter 1 discusses the social background and calligraphy ideas of Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties,and analyses the relationship between social ethos and stele inscriptioncalligraphy,Confucianism and stele inscription calligraphy.Chapter 2 focuses on the general characteristics of regular script in Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties,expounds the causes and development of regular script at that time,and analyses the artistic style of the rustic flavor and natural expressions of The Stele of Zhang Menglong.Chapter 3 mainly analyzes the artistic style and characteristics of calligraphy in the Southern and Northern Dynasties represented by The Stele of Zhang Menglong.By means of comparison and enumeration,this section analyses and expounds the lines with artistic characteristics,the strange and high structures,composition and layout,as well as the differences between this stele and other stele inscriptions.The writing style,the use of writing tools and the relationship between the master and his disciples are all the factors affecting the writing style of stele inscriptions in the Northern and Southern Dynasties.Moreover,the mature artistic style of regular scripts in Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties is analyzed from the perspective of philology and writing.Chapter 4 mainly elaborates on the historical value of The Stele of Zhang Menglong to the rise of the Stele Study Movement in the Qing Dynasty,and explores the role of stele theory in promoting the development of calligraphy.
