In recent years,more and more attention has been paid to English as an international language.English teaching is also widely concerned by people.Vocabulary,as one of the three basic elements of language,plays an important role in English learning.Nowadays,there are many deficiencies in vocabulary teaching in Chinese middle schools.At present,many middle school teachers just ask students to recite words and teach vocabulary without situations.As a result,students have many deficiencies in the use of vocabulary.Since Situational Teaching Method was introduced into China in the last century,it has attracted the attention of scholars from all walks of life.Combining Situational Teaching Method with vocabulary teaching,how to create situations in vocabulary teaching to help students and improve students' abilities to use vocabulary is one of the main issues concerned by the majority of English educators.This study focuses on the application of situation creation in English vocabulary teaching of senior high school.The study raises four questions:(1)How to create situation in vocabulary learning?(2)Whether students' English vocabulary learning through the creation of situation can achieve significant results?(3)What are the effects?(4)Why the creation of situation is helpful to students' English vocabulary learning?This study was conducted in Shimen Middle School of Nanhai district,Foshan city.The participants are students from two classes in Grade one.One class is the experimental class and the other is the controlled class.There are 55 people in each class.Before the experiment,the author conducted a pre-test and a questionnaire survey in two classes.The experiment was lasted for 17 weeks.During the experiment,Situational Teaching Method was used in the experimental class,creating situations in vocabulary teaching,while Translation Method was used in the controlled class.After the experiment,the author conducted a post-test in two classes and conducted a questionnaire survey in the experimental class.Through the exploration,the author finds five ways to create situations and apply them to vocabulary teaching.Through the experiment,the author finds that students in the experimental class are more interested in vocabulary learning,and the overall level of students in the experimental class is higher than that in the controlled class,which indicates that the creation of situation can improve students' English vocabulary learning.The experimental results also show that although the students in the experimental class do not differ much from the students in the controlled class in the translation of single words,the students in the experimental class are significantly better than the students in the controlled class in the use of vocabulary in sentences or discourses.Thisshows that the creation of situation can improve students' ability to use vocabulary in sentences and discourses.In the experiment,The creation of situation changes students' attitudes towards vocabulary learning and the students are more interested in vocabulary courses and vocabulary learning.The creation of situation allows the students to combine the form and meaning of words and make better use of vocabulary.It is expected that this study can bring some implications to English educators.The creation of situation can improve students' attitudes towards vocabulary learning and their abilities to use vocabulary.In terms of vocabulary teaching,the majority of English teachers should pay attention to the advantages of the creation of situation in vocabulary teaching,overcome its shortcomings,and help students to learn vocabulary better.
