A Study Of Annotation In The E-C Translation Of The Anthropological Text Culture And Conflict In The Middle East (Excerpted)

Anthropology is a discipline that studies the biological cultural nature of human beings to retrospect the origin and evolution process of humanity traits today.It always involves customs,names of important figures and places,historical and religious common senses.However,readers form different cultural backgrounds,do not know much about these “common senses” so that they cannot well understand the connotation of source texts without the help of annotations.Annotation,as a means of translation compensation,can compensate some cultural defaults as far as possible to achieve faithfulness and reproduce the style of source texts vividly.This translation practice is based on Philip Karl Salzman's book Culture and Conflict in the Middle East(excerpted).The text covers many real names of places and figures,culture-loaded words in the Middle East,historical and religious knowledge,and many anthropological terms,all of which need to be verified because they provide cultural background for the text.Therefore,this thesis focuses on what to annotate,how to annotate and what annotation to use in certain specific context when translating anthropological works.Following translation compensation principles,the author analyzes and summarizes a number of examples,and puts forward some suggestions on how to annotate and what kind of annotation to use.
