The source text,a guidebook titled Guide to Rural England: Oxfordshire, introduces the famous scenic spots in 62 towns and villages around Oxfordshire.Through vivid introductions and explanations of those well-known tourist attractions, the guidebook provides visitors with knowledge about the history, culture and folk stories behind the attractions. The source text is one kind of tourism texts.English tourism texts focus on the information transmission of scenic spots, geographical environment, and local facilities, while Chinese tourism texts highlight the humanistic characteristics and scenery. In view of these differences, the present author chooses translation compensation strategies as theoretical foundation, trying to enable the readers to better understand the original text by compensating for the cultural default in the translation process. This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background and significance of the report. The second chapter combs domestic and foreign scholars’ researches on the translation of tourism texts from different perspectives. The third chapter demonstrates the definitions of translation compensation proposed by domestic and foreign scholars, and then,by combining Ke Ping’s translation compensation strategies and Ma Hongjun’s classification of compensation, the present author formulates the theoretical framework. The fourth chapter conducts case studies based on two compensation levels classified by Ma Hongjun, namely, explicit compensation and implicit compensation.Literal translation with annotation is a type of explicit compensation strategy, while adaptation, generalization, contextual amplification and shift of perspective fall in the category of implicit compensation. All of these compensation strategies are proposed by Ke Ping. The last part is a summary of the report, which concludes the findings and limitations of the report for further research. In this report, with specific examples, the present author analyzes the key points and difficulties in the translation of tourism texts and the corresponding translation compensation strategies. For the translation of some titles of books and proper nouns, the present author adopts explicit compensation strategies, aiming to make up for the lack of knowledge on the part of the target readers. For the information that the source readers are already familiar with, translators must take the reading experience of the target readers into account, and explicate the information that the target readers may not know through explicit compensation strategies. In addition, the application of implicit compensation strategies can effectively convey the original message to the target readers by compensating for their lack of cultural background and other knowledge and eliminating barriers in reading. Finally, through solving the problems of knowledge absence and cultural default in the translation of tourism texts,it is hoped that this report will provide a reference for translation studies in this field.
