Edouard Chavannes' sinology research played an important role in the development of modern academic history, especially he paid his second visit to China in 1907,which was particularly significant in his academic study activities.Although some of the diary manuscripts and original archives were lost in the war after Chavannes' death,we can still use the existing documents to meticulously sort out the achievements of the archaeological expedition conducted by this Mission in 1907.It shows the Europeans' understanding and research of China in modern times. This article takes time as the axis and travels as the latitude, and combs Mission's visits and their expedition achievements one by one, focusing on the origin of Chavannes and Chinese cave temple art.By discussing the formation, preservation and dispersion of the archaeological collections of the Mission, the collation, compilation and publication of catalogues and reports,we summarize the usage and evaluation of the achievements of the expedition and the impact of activities on later generations.Chavannes' records and researches on ancient monuments and inscriptions are indispensable materials in art history, also have a guiding role in the research direction and aesthetic interest of the western sinology circle and the collection circle.
