Feng Shen Yan Yi,as one of the representative works of ancient Chinese god and ghost novels,is our very important treasure.This novel takes the history that King Wu fought against King Zhou as the background.It intersperses a lot of folklore and mythology,and contains a lot of political ethics and religious thoughts.This novel has many translated versions,which build a bridge between western readers and Chinese culture so that they can understand Chinese ancient cultural traditions and religious beliefs.They have important significance for the dissemination of Chinese culture.Based on the term classification of Peter Newmark and combined with features in the novel,this thesis classifies the cultural terms in Feng Shen Yan Yi into six categories from the perspective of culture and translation: a)Names for people and places;b)Names for gods in Feng Shen Yan Yi;c)Names for weapons in Feng Shen Yan Yi;d)Terms about idioms;e)Terms for customs;f)Religious terms.In this thesis,the above six categories are concluded into two sorts: common cultural terms and specific cultural terms in Feng Shen Yan Yi,and those terms are discussed and analyzed through several typical translation examples by referring to Aixelá's translation strategies of cultural-specific items,and it also performs some analysis on the effect of the six types of terms through the translation of typical example.It is hoped to draw some suitable translation strategies for cultural terms in Chinese classics,especially the god and ghost classics.According to the analysis,the version translated by Gu Zhizhong is centered on the reader,and the cultural thoughts in the original text is rewritten in a way that it is easier for the target language readers to receive and understand,so that the reader can better understand the Chinese culture and thoughts.The translator mainly adopted four types of translation strategies to explain the inner culture and thoughts.They are literal translation,free or creative translation,transliteration and mixture translation.Through the modification of the above four strategies,the cultural terms that contain the traditional Chinese culture and thoughts are able to be understood and accepted quickly and successfully by target readers as well as attract their interests in the Chinese culture so as to actively get to know and understand China.The purpose of Gu Zhizhong's version of Feng Shen Yan Yi is to contribute to the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.Although Gu Zhizhong's version is the most comprehensive and complete translation in the world,there are still some points need to be further improved.For example,in translating some terms about the names,the overly dissimilated translation strategy is adopted so that the target readers cannot understand the thoughts and culture contained in those terms.Lastly,this thesis also puts forward the author's views on the future development of cultural terminology translation in China,hoping to provide some references for scholars engaged in related research in the future.
