A Report On The Translation Of Between The World And Me(Excerpt)

This is an English-Chinese translation report on the excerpt of Between the World and Me,an African-American non-fiction novel written by Ta-Nehisi Coates.The book won the National Book Awards’ top prize for nonfiction for his depiction of America’s race problem.The author describes his feelings of being an African-American and the damage done to their kind,depicts prominent incidents of social injustice in the US,and points out the racial discrimination is deep-rooted in American history.The translator finishes about one third of the book for the source of this translation report.This translation report consists of five parts.The first part introduces the project,including importance,purpose and report structure.The second part gives an overall description of the translation project,including preparations,analysis of stylistic features,types of translation difficulty and after-translation management.The third part touches upon the translation difficulty in parallelism and the theoretical approach.The fourth part,the main section of the report,focuses on case analysis and translation techniques of parallelism.The last part summarizes the findings,limitations in the translation process and suggestions for future studies.The author finds that translating parallelism should not only put great emphasis on the structure of the sentence,but also on the color and the tone of the language so as to strengthen the contextual effects and achieve the optimal relevance.Therefore,different translation techniques have been adopted,such as annotation,inversion,repetition and addition.Through this translation practice,the author knows better the importance of the combination of theory and practice.
