In the translation project, the source text(ST)is an excerpt from Chapter 6 “Oil” in the book Energy Economics: Markets,History and Policy. The source text illustrates that adequacy of oil reserves will continue to fuel the economy and describes potential of nonconventional oil resources.Today, sharp decreasing of oil price leads to unstable oil market and global oil shock.Facing the oil crisis, several countries have continuously issued new policies to reduce oil vulnerability.Under this background, translation of the source text will offer the readers a new perspective to understand oil economics. The translator translates the source text under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation raised by Peter Newmark. In translating the source text, the translator focuses on conveying the information in the source text and the effect of expression of the target text(TT)to ensure efficient transfer of information. This report consists of task description, process description, case analysis and conclusion. The report starts with the introduction to the translation project. Then, the translator makes a description of the translation process. In this chapter, definition, differences, relations and applications of semantic and communicative translation are illustrated. On the basis of translation practice, the translator applies diction and sequential translation to the translation under the guidance of semantic translation.Under the guidance of communicative translation, translation strategies including addition, omission, conversion, reconstruction, inversion and division are applied to the translation. This report attempts to explore E-C translation of English for science and technology(EST)under semantic and communicative translation in order to convey clear and understandable information to target readers.
