The Saga of the People of Laxardal is vast in conception.Its story happened from 890 to 1030 and written down between 1250 to 1270.The saga includes important characters from other major sagas,and its time span is well over acentury.This is a family saga,describing the line of Ketil Flat-nose,and more particularly that of his daughter Unn the Deep-minded,the matriarchal settler of Dalir,in west Iceland.Women status in this saga was in a high position from the beginning.The settlers,the political system they established and the living conditions of their people were all necessary reasons for prominent women status.The first chapter is the background overview of The Saga of the People of Laxardal.In Scandinavia,during the period of The Vikings,the navigation asked people for open minds.Wealth,status and land were acquired through navigation,war and negotiation.Generations and lives of their clan constituted the source of saga.The second chapter discusses the status of women in The Saga of the People of Laxardal.Through the specific female characters and plots,the status of representative women or highlighted women are discussed.With specific stories and cases,their status is reflected in the establishment of social rules,the right of commending their family,the right of controlling possessions as well as the phenomenon of marriage and funeral following their own wishes.The third chapter analyzes the characteristics of female in The Saga of the People of Laxardal.This chapter summarized phenomenons discovered in the texts.For example,almost all women in the saga are beautiful,there are male features in female characteristics and different characteristic they showed during navigation or regular life events.The fourth chapter exploring values and functions of the female in The Saga of the People of Laxardal.Through the contrast between female and male images,this chapter highlights that females are not appears as male's accessories.Their existence propelled both structures and contents,which also are important reference about history and people's living status.Meanwhile,it promotes advanced thoughts about current female status and working on building current female views.
