Hamartia(?????i?)normally understood as "error" it is a common word used in ancient Greek texts and literatures. However, the recovery of Aristotle's Poetics in the Renaissance brought this term back to people's eyes as one of the core terms of tragic theory. The tragic hero according to Aristotle is "a man who is neither good nor bad,but somewhere in the middle of that.He is neither exceptionally virtuous nor just. And he then falls into misfortune not for his villainy or evil, but hamartia"(1453a).Interpretation and translation of Aristotele's hamartia has invited many debates among critics and scholars of classical studies.Providing the academic world's different interpretations on hamartia since the Renaissance, the preface introduces the meaning of the term, and the origin of debates caused by which. The first chapter collected uses of hamartia and its cognates from the Homeric age to the New Testament and provides the three degrees to which hamartia and its cognates are defined as-miss,error,and sin.Through analysis and summaries of the data,it is realized that hamartia's meaning was extended and developed from the first degree to the third degree, during which it went further and further from its original literal meaning. The second chapter differentiates hamartia and its synonyms. It interprets the term as the wrong decision caused by miscalculation during choices, which could have been avoided but then happened because of the ignorance of the"good",the following of the "desired" and the failure in balancing between "too much"and "too little".Subesquently, the Chinese translation of hamartia is provided as-“?”(pronounced as "jiu" and normally means“error”).The third chapter analysis hamartia in Oedipus Tyrannus and Oedipus at Colonus so as to generate the model of ancient Greek tragedy:?????i?-????????-???????i?.And elaborate the phenomenon of rationalizing fashion in Athens with hamartia. In the Conclusion,by analyzing the semantic meaning of harmartia,we could draw two interpreting trend of hamartia:one is Greek way which is rationalizing the wrongdoing, the other is Christianity way which is sinnilizing the wrongdoing.
