Thomas Kyd is an English playwright and one of the most important playwrights in the development of Elizabethan drama. His The Spanish Tragedy initiates the revenge tragedy of his day and has received wide popularity and great attention to him since its publication. In this thesis, the author intends to analyze the differences between Aristotle‘s theory of tragedy in The Poetics and The Spanish Tragedy to find the reasons why Thomas Kyd dares to break previous rules of Aristotle‘s The Poetics based on the 16th-century England history, that is,the influence of English Renaissance, social reality and religious factors.According to the motif of The Spanish Tragedy and the multiple reasons of why Kyd makes changes in tragedy creation, this paper argues that the incoherence with Aristotle‘s The Poetics is not the shortcoming of The Spanish Tragedy but Kyd‘s breakthrough in character development and plot construct with unique dramatic effects.
