In January 2018,"English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition)"(hereinafter referred to as "New Curriculum Standards")was officially promulgated.The new curriculum standard requires that the teaching of English should be based on the comprehensive and profound understanding of the subject around the connotation of key competence and its constituent elements.The key competence of English subject consists of four aspects: language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.It is the beacon of the new curriculum reform and should be paid enough attention in the process of English teaching.Starting from the concept of the new round of curriculum reform and the connotation of key competence of English subject,this paper investigates the current cultivation of key competence of English subject in senior high schools in Nanning,mainly discussing the following questions:(1)What is the situation of the cultivation of English key competence in senior high schools in Nanning?(2)What are the main factors affecting the key competence of English subjects of high school students in Nanning?On the basis of an overview of previous studies on English key competence,the author discusses the connotation of English key competences,language competence,learning ability,cultural awareness and thinking quality.By collecting and analyzing the data of questionnaires,the results show that:(1)The development of key competence of English subject among senior high school students in Nanning is not balanced: the current cultivation of students' language competence is satisfactory,but the current cultivation of students' learning ability,students' thinking quality and students' cultural awareness is not optimistic.(2)Through interviews,it is found that the imbalanced factors affecting the key competence of senior high school students in English are mainly curriculum setting,teacher training,teachers' teaching and the influence of entrance examination.Finally,the author puts forward some suggestions on how to cultivate and improve senior high school students' English key competence from three aspects: education department,teachers and schools.This study hopes to provide some valuable information for Nanning's education departments,schools,and English teachers.
